The Edge 705 is the current top of the range GPS cycle computer from Garmin, which comes bundled with different add-ons, including Heart Rate, Cadence, and various Street Maps including those for Europe. It can also receive power data from ANT+ enabled third-party power metres and you can share all sorts of information with friends or team members in a variety of ways. Its an all wireless device of course.
The Garmin 705 has a built in basemap with a microSD card slot for inserting additional map details and for storing saved rides, workouts and courses. You can plug in detailed MapSource City Navigator street maps on a preloaded data card which will then give you route instructions turn by turn. Its a colour display, which gives great results when you add on topographic mapping for off road rides.
There is a large amount of data you can get from your Edge 705, both minute by minute on your ride and also when you've finished later and are sitting at a computer. The measurements you get from the computer include: speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent - all of which are recorded.
If you need more detail and analysis of your cycling, the Edge 705 also includes a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation during your ascent and descent.
When its important to see how hard you are working, the 705 can accept input from third-party ANT+ Sport enabled power meters with an increasing list of compatible devices, so you can see your output in watts as you ride. Conditions on your rides will inevitable vary day to day, so this data can be stored as well for analysis later, which is especially important if you are in training.
Heart Rate and Cadence can both be displayed and recorded with the Garmin 705 and the incorporated wireless technology means you don't have any tricky wiring to fix anywhere on your bike. The Heart Rate is included with all versions, with the speed / cadence sensor an add-on if you want it.
The sensor attaches to your rear wheel, so you can also use it for indoor cycle training.
Ride information can be shared with other Edge 705 users wirelessly within a 3 meter range by using data transfer, so you can easily compare cycling experiences. More importantly, the computer gives you the ability to store and analyse data and share with others, wherever they are. By connecting to the Garmin Connect website, you can join many other cyclists and discuss and swap information. There is also a Garmin Training Centre, where you can get access to training and fitness data for planning your own rides, cycling routes, personal and team training.
