Garmin's 305 adds to the specification of the Edge 205 GPS cycle computer, by including a wireless heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.
Along with measuring your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, the Edge 305 also records the route you have taken. To help with training, this unit also incorporates a altimeter so you can see changes in elevation and their effect on your cycling.
As with the 205, no calibration is required so the unit just snaps into the bike mount and is complete with high-sensitivity GPS receiver for tracking your position in tree cover and deep valleys, so its reliable for location, distance and speed information.
Virtual Partner lets you race a virtual competitor over a specified distance and speed and Courses lets you race against a previously recorded workout, so you can compare your current and past performances over the same ride. Auto Pause is present so the timer pauses when you slow down or stop and resumes when you speed up again. Auto Lap automatically starts a new lap each time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance.
Edge 305 differs from the 205 in that it also has a heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, or both. The wireless sensors use ANT technology to send data to the Edge. This gives you a whole new area for gaining knowledge about your cycling training and rides.
You can measure and track your heart rate using a lightweight, comfortable heart rate strap.
Interference from other devices is minimised by the ANT technology.
With the wireless cadence sensor included, you can watch your pedaling cadence and wheel speed, also being able to use it for indoor training by attaching the sensor to the rear wheel.
Garmin's Virtual Partner lets you race a virtual competitor over a specified distance and speed.
You can also set up courses to race against a previously recorded time, for comparison as your training progresses.
The Auto Pause is a useful facility for when you slow down or stop and the Auto Lap automatically starts a new lap each time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance.
Garmin also has free software which you can use to analyse and store data from your workouts perhaps overlaying your ride on a map so you can see how elevation and various other factors affect your performance.
Online, there is also the website MotionBased.com, Garmin's application that provides analysis, online mapping and route sharing. Serious athletes can also use TrainingPeaks.com, designed to help athletes train for any event.
